Agreed, nothing like this is ever "free".

There are several free antiviruses for Windows, so...

I think there just weren't enough people buying Mac-only commercial licenses.
Now you gotta pay for cross-platform licenses to get professional tech support and all the extra business and security features (Management console, encryption, antispam, firewall etc.).

Whatever is cheaper. Steam sales have coddled me.

If they are using the App Store for distribution then I'd assume a new feature of Lion is "Build a Recovery DVD". That means you can write your own install DVD to be used after a crash. One would hope.

This is good news and very much needed.

Some of us professionals need the upgrade potential of the Mac Pro where we can upgrade our video card and other cards but we sure don't need all the raid card slots and I/O ports on the front and back.

I'd love to see them go with a smaller form factor and less slots for storage and I/O to bring the price down some while keeping the processor options the same. Memory slots...well if the new final cut is using the 16bit architecture, the more the merrier.

Allowing the processor options is the big thing to me in any version of it.

    Bit harsh, but true.

Probably because there is no need for it in that range? Plus most Mac Pro users won't use Apple displays IMO

I can see this happening. I think it's a very clever move for Apple as they will be going away from commodity chips, will have more control over their chip design, will have better power consumption - which is a big thing with their environmentalism push, they will potentially be able to merge iOS and OSX.

I don't see this as a bad thing and to those saying they won't buy another iMac - that could be true, the Mac may no longer be a brand anymore in 2013.

Apple only went with intel because IBM was never going to be able to make a G5 laptop chip. Why are people so closed minded when it comes to change?

since no one split up, everyone is.

Just as the heroes began to look around the closet, the torch flickered and its life left. They huddled together in the darkness for a second until they heard the click of Rosius' staff on the floor and saw its head come to life, casting a dim blue light fainter than the torch's.

They began walking around the room, sticking to the wall on their left. Rhon, Loras and Jorah all wore looks of determination after they had just lost their dear but foolish friend Wilmer. Dante and Beatrice hung close to Rosius who led them around the room. It wasn't long before they realized they were back were they started, and the door in was also the door out.

Just as Dante let out a sight of frustration, Rosius turned his head to study a line in the bricks that they had just passed. As he scrutinized it further, he realized it was no ordinary wall, so he gave it a light shove. The wall moved, stone biting against stone as it kicked up dust while it swung inward.

Inside, gleaming in the staff's blue light, was a solid gold cylinder with two spheres making up its base.

    "It's a weapon!" exclaimed Jorah.

"No," Loras interjected "I think it's a sceptre of some sort."

"Who cares what it is" Rhon declared. "It's gold."

The heroes have found a treasure and leveled up.

The only future for MobileMe is to adopt the DropBox model. Which is a shame really, because Apple was so close to it years ago with iDisk but never put it all together.

Have your home folders automatically backup to MobileMe and access them anywhere, iPhones, iTouchs, iPads, other Macs, you name it. It would also put the downright draconian file sharing implementation of the iWorks apps on the iPad out to pasture.

It would be smart to make part of OS X itself and offer it for free, then sell extra disk space at a modest premium to get people to backup their iTunes and iPhoto libraries to the cloud.

Most of all though, it all has to be transparent. Anything I save to the Home folder is automatically backed up to the cloud in short order so I can have almost immediate access to it elsewhere. No need to mount iDisk as a separate volume, just connect to a MobileMe account in the System Preferences and your home folders are automatically synced with the cloud.

It's just makes too much sense for Apple to pass up.

I'll wait for that until Paris, and if it isn't available then, I'll buy a PC with Core 2 Duo E6600 and GeForce 7900 GT.

Mac OS X not do anything for you? :) I do agree that there is space for a Mid-range desktop.

I think if Apple just made the Mac Mini a bit bigger. They could fit in a Core 2 Duo (Conroe) inside along with a 3.5" Hard Drive and GMA X3000. The 1.86 GHz Conroe kills the Yonah Core Solo in everything and costs less than the Core Solo. A 3.5" Hard Drive is also much better in the value department. Couple this with an option for a Single-Woodcrest Mac Pro and it completely eliminates the need for a mid-range tower.

umm....that magazine add looks rather real to me. WTF?

on another note, Vodafones 3G network here in NZ has video calls as standard on every phone they sell for the network. Its not revolutionary, they have had it since December last year. It doesnt cost any more than a regular mobile to mobile call. oh, and the person calling is the only one who pays (the fact that americans pay to answer a call is insane).

They also have an itunes sized music library that you can browse and download to your phone ( its 3.50NZD per track, which is about $2 USD). Its quite popular seeing as Apple has chosen not to have an Itunes store in New Zealand. They have sold hundreds of thousands of ipods, but there is nowhere to download songs legally. stupid huh? :(

We pay full retail for most phones, but we aren't locked into any sort of contract. And to the person who said txting should be banned from apples phone: why call someone for ten times the price of a SMS text when you dont need too?

Why use Japanese companies over American Companies. If they are made in China by a Japanese company why would that be cheaper than an American company being made in China? Also if the plants are in Japan they are just as expensive or more to produce in Japan as it is in the U.S. Have you seen any cameras or t.v's made in Japan for the U.S? Japanese people will not buy a t.v or camera etc if it's made outside of Japan, that why they pay much more for products made in Japan. If they are not going to make them in their U.S. make them in China for the lowest cost.

Wilmer will be missed but he was slowing us down with his incessant blather. I'm starting to get hungry so let's try to find a kitchen in this dump so the wizard can make us sandwiches.

Vote - Move to the next room (take Wilmer's body along with us).

Jorah, I'm not certain we are going to be able to follow the "Leave No Man Behind" SEAL philosophy ad infinitum as there will eventually be too many to carry and too few to carry them.

And just so you know, I believe it is Beatrice who is reputed to be a sandwich maker extraordinaire. I for one, have no first hand knowledge unfortunately.

Why do these numbers never make sense to me? Massive iOS device sales, no reports of Android sales, yet -bam - Android takes over the world? I just don't get it...

There are reports like this, then debunked, then a new one, then debunked. What is really going on?

Regarding using a case with the tom tom kit--I bought a casemate (comes shiny and somewhat rubberized) and it fits fine in my tomtom car kit.

check out the website. maybe it's a solution for you.

"We've learned and struggled for a few years here figuring out how to make a decent phone,'' he said. "PC guys are not going to just figure this out. They're not going to just walk in.''
I do see what he's getting at there, Apple haven't done a portable device that can stand on its own in several years now. The iPod arrangement works so well because much of the dirty work was offloaded to the host computer.

A lot could depend on how much Apple learned from what Newton got right and wrong, and how much knowledge disappeared (or didn't) with its retirement.

I've been doing a bit of thinking about the video airport express rumor thats been doing the rounds.

If you were to take the current AE and add a video out, you'd get a fairly poor user experience. ie. no remote, no control! Also the form factor of the current AE is such that you plug it in and hide it away.

Some might clamour for a wireless remote, but 2 factors limit this possibility, reduced battery life (on wifi) and a poor response through walls (bluetooth). Apple's shown in the past they are quite happy with the reliable and long established infra-red remote.

I believe therefore that the updated AE will appear as a small set top box, in order to have the IR in plain view. The other thing about the set top box. It' aint gonna be some boring grey flat component. Apple will want people to love it as much as the ipod. Therefore i suspect we'll see a distinctly visible design, different to all the other set top's and AV components we have to date. With SJ's love affair with cubes, perhaps this is an opportunity for the Aluminium Media Cube. Small llike 3" with a small hal like blue eye watching our every move. ;)

The other aspect i'd like to touch on is that in order to make these puppies sell like hotcakes, i.e.Cheap, i suspect the aforementioned cube to be very basic dumb terminal. Dependent on a wireless mac or PC for disk and essentially only displaying a frontrow remote display. This of course would mean front row for older macs and pc's.

The other other aspect (Gah i should think about these posts before writing). Is that no one is going to want to run upstairs to their Mac, go on itunes, click on the media store, select Scary movie #17 (more boobs than all the rest), click download. Then run downstairs to the Media cube, finger on button guessing when they can start to play. I therefore think that front row will gain an interface onto the ITMS so that media can be bought from the comfort of the sofa. This will kick off the actual download from upstairs computer and the front row interface will show when the user can start the movie.

Apple have patents for remote displays and specifically buying a item of media on one device and downloading to another. Search Macsimumnews.com if you're really interested.

As i said, this is only a bit of out of the box thinking. I personally hope the device is more intelligent with a HardDisk so if my Mac is powered down, its not completely useless, along with the absolutely essential need to be able to record just like tivo. But here's waiting, should know in about 29 hrs. tick tock, tick tock.

    M.

I don't doubt scientists when they advocate for the metric system, in science. Howeve, since most of the advantages of the metric system are really reserved to the sciences, the question of whether or not everything in life should be metric really isn't a scientific one; it's an economic and convenience one. ....
